Welcome back, fellow traders! Did you successfully cope with (or are you still successfully coping with) the cold snap that swept across most of the northeastern quarter of the country last night? Brrrrr.

Stay warm, and to the extent it helps, the first day of spring is only eleven weeks away! Just imagine yourself in the nearby picture of the summertime beach scene. Doesn't help? Oh, well. I had to try. Now, about this market...

I've got a couple of quick thoughts/observations about stocks today, but mostly I want to take a closer look at just how crazy - and dangerous - the bullishness from amateur investors has gotten.

We're Dumping This Stock and Buying That One

Welcome to the weekend, folks. We hope your holiday-shortened trading week was a good one. The bulls did what they could today to end things on a high note, but Friday's small gain didn't even come close to undoing Thursday's drubbing.

You know what though? We've got bigger fish to fry right now than handicapping the market. We need to take a look at our open trading ideas. The last two days haven't been particularly kind to any of them, so much so that we need to go ahead and dump one of our stocks. Don't worry though - we're replacing it with a new pick.

Just as a reminder, our current open picks are Group 1 Automotive (GPI), Fred's (FRED), Skyworks Solutions (SWKS), and Silicon Image (SIMG).

Whoops. An Inauspicious Start to 2014

Happy New Year, everybody, though the market sure didn't do anything to help us get 2014 started on an encouraging foot. The S&P 500 closed down about 0.8%. Yikes.

If you're looking for a reason or a prompt for the pullback, don't bother - there wasn't any substantive news or any kind of economic catalyst to spark the selloff. The most reasonable explanation is, traders were waiting until today to sell so they wouldn't have to deal with the tax consequences when filing 2013's tax returns. Whatever gains or losses were booked today won't be a factor until tax-filing time in 2015.

Hello friends and fellow traders. Since we won't be publishing anything tomorrow because of the holiday, we want to go ahead and tell you this now....

Happy New Year! It's hard to believe the next turn of the calendar will end 2013 and begin 2014. Where does the time go? Anyway, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you for being part of the SmallCap Network community in 2013.

We've said it before but we'll say it again - you guys are the best and smartest group of traders in the world, and that makes running the site and publishing this newsletter not only (fairly) easy, but a lot of fun. We hope it's fun and fruitful for you too. And, we hope you and your loved ones have a great - and profitable - 2014.

Happy Friday, folks! You've got to love it when this weekend falls squarely in between Christmas and New Year's. That little two-day bridge effectively makes this a whole week off. Yeah, the markets are open and we're working, but it's a light week and we can get a bunch of things published that had been on the backburner. It also gives us a chance to do some year-end and year-beginning stuff for you guys. Speaking of....

Have you made your New Year's resolutions yet? Everybody here has some personal ones we'll be working towards in 2014, but there were some professional/trading ones we wanted to share with you guys as well. We had six in all, initially, but I've narrowed it down to just one for now... make more money!
