Happy hump-day, everybody, and what a day it was! Though I'm not surprised stocks dipped deep into the red ink on Wednesday given the bigger trend now in place, I would have thought we'd see at least a little traction after yesterday's bullish intraday upside reversal. Guess not.

The $64,000 question is, how bad are things thanks to today's setback? The answer is, pretty bad.

We'll dissect the market's new problems below. The first thing we want to serve up today is a look at some of the website's recent commentaries, including a big leap forward from one of our currently-featured names.

Did everybody survive Tuesday's volatility? Geez. How crazy was that? Just when it looked like we were finally moving past the point of no return, the bulls came back to the table with an appetite.

I can tell you what's going on that finally materialized in today's wild swing. I'm just not sure you're going to like it.

As an investor, have you ever had one of those coulda-shoulda-woulda moments? If you've been trading for any length of time at all then you've been through it at least once, if not several times. I know I have.

Well, I've got a feeling Cardinal Resources (CDNL) is about to dish out a coulda-shoulda-woulda moment to any investor who knew the company's story before the close of business yesterday but still chose not to step into a position. This morning's news was not only vindicating, but eye-opening.

In case you didn't catch last Thursday's edition of the SmallCap Network newsletter, here's the synopsis.

I'd score Wednesday's action as another failed recovery effort, which is only slightly more concerning than things would be if there were no rebound effort at all. In the end though, I've got a bad feeling it's all going to come out the same. How does the old Ben Graham quote go? "In the short run, the market is a voting machine but in the long run it is a weighing machine"? Yeah, well, I think that applies nicely right now to our current situation. That is, I've got a feeling one way or another we're going to be right-sizing the market's valuation. I just figured we'd see a better bullish pushback by now following Monday's meltdown.

We actually got a reader comment/question on this very matter in response to yesterday's newsletter regarding the market's current valuation problem. Since odds are good many of you are thinking the same thing, I thought we'd answer it today.

Is the second quarter really over already? That's what my calendar says. Wow. Where'd the time go?

You know what this means, of course.... Q2 earnings season is right around the corner. Alcoa (AA) unofficially gets the ball rolling on July 8th, which means we need to start doing our homework now so we know what to expect starting in just a few days. And as they say, no better time than the present. Let's just dive in beginning there today with a look at what's expected earnings-wise.
