Market
Update
The
market was 'supposed to' hit a peak on Tuesday, but higher closes all three
days since then indicate the bulls either (1) didn't know, and/or (2) didn't
care. All told, the S&P 500 is on pace to close the week out higher
by 14 points, around 1239.
Yet, if you
think there's something just "not quite right" about the way this is all
panning out, you're not crazy - this is creepy.
That's not to
say there hasn't been some great bigger-picture news as a backdrop for
this rally. The trade deficit is shrinking, consumer confidence is getting
better, and unemployment claims are falling.... all good things. They're
all longer-term things though, and considering the SPX is up 5.0% for the
last two weeks and up 19% since the end of August (with only one 5% corrective
move in the meantime), the broad economic support doesn't change the fact
- and risk - that stocks are overbought at this point, and ripe for a tumble.
That's the conundrum
- do we follow this incredible momentum knowing it's well beyond reason
on the heels of only mediocre economic news, or do we trade based on the
rationale assumption that stocks will ultimately pay the price for working
their way into this overbought scenario?
