If It Seems Eerily Familiar...
Feel like you're a yo-yo, being whipped around by this crazy market? Join the club. We've got a couple of commentaries below that should help keep it all in a healthy perspective, beginning with this one. (The other one is in the community section of this update.)
It's earnings season, and so far, so good ....for at least a couple of sectors. Of course, stocks may or may not respond indicatively of earnings in the near-term. Still, it's good information to know.
Here's what's moving and apt to be trade-worthy today (and how you should actually handle it).
Important Updates From the Community
It would still be much cooler if they dressed like pirates and their boats had cannons and big sails. But, these seafarers are still doing a pretty good job of getting and moving the loot.... legally. Arrrgh. John U. chimes in as well with a closer look at DryShips (DRYS), and a bearish view of Safe Bulkers (SB).
Picks of the litter from the REIT world.
It can't be said enough.... there's more money to be made in the obscure - almost unrecognized - industries than there is to be made in high-profile arenas like, say consumer technology. A few select lumber and wood stocks are lighting it up in a business that's about as low tech as it gets. Boring is beautiful.
This industry was still on life support just a few months ago after slipping into a coma halfway through the recession. Now it's knocking them out of the park like it's swinging at slow-pitch softballs. Yet, there's still so much room to recover.
Big banks are bad, small banks are good.
Stocks, gold, and the dollar - oh my! Chris Vermeulen puts all of them under a microscope, and comes to bullish (even if conditional) conclusions. Mostly though, stocks and gold are at the mercy of the dollar.... which may actually be getting a little too weak to expect more of the same. The charts alone are worth a few moments of your time.
It's easy to get excited about a stock that's on the move and just dive in without taking a bigger-picture look. Far too often though, these 'obvious' breakout efforts just go nowhere, making you a chump. Here are three charts that fit the bill.... BSD Medical Corporation, Cinedigm Digital Cinema, and Viropro. If instead you're looking for some new long/bullish ideas.....
......
look at these.
What a surprise - two of these three upgrades came well after the big runup, basically defeating the purpose. Gotta' love analysts' timing. Still, two of the three (not the same two that are already well up) look like they could rekindle a rally and dole out a little more upside.
